As soon as I arrived at Pioneer Square, there was an electric buzz in the air. Everyone was wearing white, dancing, and laughing. The organizer, DJ Prashant, worked with the city to plan the event, the first annual Portland Holi Festival.
The festival is free, but you need to buy color packets there. The organizer worked with the city to make sure the color was natural and safe, as it would cover Pioneer Square and be washed into the sewers. DJ Prashant imported the packets of color from India, and even had family members helping at the event. The big rule was that the only powder/color thrown had to be from the packets purchased through the event itself. Unfortunately, some attendees brough their own colors, and the organizer had to caution everyone with reminders that the festival wouldn't be allowed to take place if non-approved colors were used.
Still, the highlight of Holi was the color throw, followed by the amazing dance music and crowds of people celebrating together. I really hope the event continues in future! If you didn't get to see it today, Sunday, 3/30, has a full lineup too!
